Our work so far with Challenging MND

9 June 2026

Over the past few months, we’ve been proud to continue our support of Challenging MND. April and May saw a series of inspiring events unfold, bringing people together to raise vital funds and awareness for those affected by Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

From endurance challenges to competitive sporting events, each initiative has contributed to making a tangible difference, raising essential funds, increasing awareness, and strengthening support for individuals and families navigating life with Motor Neurone Disease.

Taking on the Marathon des Sables

Back in April, Andy Long took on one of the toughest endurance events in the world, the Marathon des Sables. Battling extreme desert heat and relentless sand dunes, Andy pushed himself to the limit to raise funds for a hugely important initiative: the MND Carer Coordinator within the Essex NHS Trusts.

This vital role, arranged by Challenging MND, provides essential support and guidance to individuals living with MND and their families, ensuring they have access to the care, advice and assistance they need during incredibly difficult times.

A 24-hour test of strength

While Andy faced the desert, Alex Gibson, founder of Challenging MND, led an equally demanding challenge closer to home: a 24-hour circuit event hosted by CBK Essex.

The challenge featured 10 exercise stations, with participants completing 268 repetitions every hour for every kilometre Andy covered during his race. It was a relentless test of endurance, teamwork and determination.

Among those taking part was Shaun Roberts, Audit & Assurance Director and long-term supporter of Challenging MND. Shaun completed an impressive 3,216 reps during his 12-hour overnight “graveyard shift.” Meanwhile, Alex demonstrated incredible resilience by taking part in the full 24 hours: an outstanding achievement.

Together, these combined efforts showcased the power of community and commitment behind the cause.

A busy day of sport

The momentum continued into May, with Shaun Roberts taking part in a packed day of fundraising through sport at the Challenging MND Golf Day and Rugby Tournament.

Golf Day Success

Kicking off the day on the course, Shaun delivered a fantastic performance at the Challenging MND Golf Day, securing an impressive 3rd place finish. The event brought together supporters, participants and sponsors, all united by a shared goal.

Beyond the competition itself, the day provided a valuable opportunity to connect, reflect and support a cause that continues to impact so many individuals and families.

Rugby Tournament Triumph

The momentum didn’t stop there. Heading into the evening, Shaun joined the rugby tournament, where determination and teamwork were on full display.

Competing as part of a squad of just 14 players, the team delivered an outstanding performance, going unbeaten with four wins from four matches. It was a remarkable effort, especially given the limited squad size, and a true testament to the team’s resilience and spirit.

A powerful fundraising impact

Across April and May’s events, the impact has been significant. The April challenges alone raised an incredible £35,800, with a further £13,000 raised during the May Golf Day and Rugby Tournament.

These funds will make a real and lasting difference, helping Challenging MND continue its vital work supporting individuals and families through both practical and emotional support, as well as creating meaningful and memorable experiences.

Making a real difference

Challenging MND is an incredible charity, and Shaun’s continued involvement reflects the personal connection behind the cause.

From endurance challenges in the desert to round-the-clock fitness events and competitive sporting success, these recent months highlight the dedication, resilience and generosity of everyone involved.

Let’s continue to band together to support this important initiative.
