The 2026 Autumn Budget announced changes which may affect business owners, employers, individuals and property owners. Our budget team has explored the key measures introduced by the Chancellor, and set out practical advice in our Autumn Budget guide on what they could mean for you.
In his first Budget as Chancellor, John Healey set out the Government’s plans for taxation, public spending and economic growth. The statement was aimed at supporting households, encouraging investment and providing greater stability for small and medium businesses.
Alongside wider economic and cost-of-living measures, the Budget introduced a number of changes that could affect owner-managed businesses, employers, property owners and private clients. While some announcements take effect immediately, others will influence planning decisions over the coming months and years.
Below, you’ll find our Budget guide, along with practical advice and expert insights to help you understand what has changed, who may be affected and the considerations you may wish to take into account moving forward.
Updates for businesses and employers
Founders’ Relief: what the new proposals could mean for business owners
The Autumn Budget introduced proposals for a new Founders’ Relief, which could provide a reduced 10% Capital Gains Tax rate on qualifying share disposals from April 2027. Aimed at founders and early investors in high-growth UK businesses, the relief could create valuable opportunities for those planning a future business sale.
Company distributions and shareholder exits
Today’s measures included a number of proposed reforms affecting company distributions, shareholder exits and business re-organisations. The measures are aimed at restricting the conversion of company profits into capital receipts, while expanding reliefs for certain commercial transactions, including demergers and shareholder succession planning. Business owners, family companies and shareholders may be impacted by the proposals.
Capital allowances: changes to first-year and writing-down allowances
The announcement brings important changes for businesses investing in plant and machinery, alongside a simpler R&D tax relief claims process. From 2027, the increased first-year allowance could help businesses access tax relief sooner on qualifying investment, while the reduction in writing-down allowances means the timing of expenditure will become even more important.
What the latest payroll and employment tax changes mean for employers
The Budget combines new measures, previously announced reforms and continued freezes to key employment tax thresholds. While many headline rates remain unchanged, employers should be aware of National Minimum Wage increases, mandatory payrolling of benefits and future pension salary sacrifice reforms.
Updates for individuals and landlords
What Property Owners, Landlords and Developers need to know
The announcement brought several changes for property owners, landlords and developers, including higher taxes on personally owned rental property, VAT simplification for sales to social housing providers and targeted changes to Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT).
High-Value Council Tax Surcharge and Business Rates: What they mean for you
The Autumn Budget provides further detail on the High Value Council Tax Surcharge from April 2028, alongside additional business rates support for smaller retail, hospitality and leisure businesses.
What does it mean for individuals and families?
The Budget introduced a range of measures affecting individuals, families, landlords, savers and business owners, including include higher tax rates on savings and property income from April 2027, changes to Capital Gains Tax reliefs, updates to Inheritance Tax and pension rules, and reforms affecting self-employed individuals.
