Celebrating International Women's Day 2025

6 March 2025

8th March celebrates International Women’s Day, which is a global movement to celebrates women’s achievements, raises awareness about discrimination and takes action to forge gender equality. The theme this year is #AccelerateAction, a call to recognise strategies and schemes that actively and positively impact women.

At Affinia, we have a 52% rate of female staff and pride ourselves in the support and development of these women and our ongoing efforts to support gender equality in the workplace. We want to be a part of a world that strives for equality, diversity and inclusivity.

We invited some of the women across our group to share their insights with us, asking them if you met your younger self for coffee, what career advice would you give her? Here’s what they said:

Affinia People & Culture Team

Becky Barker, Senior Accountant

“I met my younger self for coffee, she ordered a mango refresher because she had not learned to like tea or coffee yet. I told her to trust her instincts and don’t feel pressured to follow paths others try to set out for you. I told her that it is ok to travel and live life a bit first. When she realises how capable she is she can achieve whatever she puts her mind to. I told her I am only a few exams away from becoming a chartered accountant and I have been to 6 out of the 7 continents.”

Chloe McCann, Audit and Accounts Manager

“I met my younger self for a coffee, she was five minutes early, and so was I. She was anxious about an upcoming meeting, and I tell her to relax because we have learned how to be an important voice at the table and there was a spark in her eye. She tells me that she is worried about getting everything perfect or right first time and I tell her we had to stop worrying about that, and when we did, our career furthered because of it. She asked if we faced any challenges and I told her, of course we did – but we faced them head on with the incredible support of our colleagues and mentors and now we are learning to thrive. Her shoulders relaxed and we both finished our drinks in calm and quiet.”

Sarah Little, Audit Manager

“If I met my younger self for coffee I would stress the importance of relationships within the workplace: over the years I have met people who are now lifelong friends! This also gave me the opportunity to return to work at Clarkson Hyde on a part-time basis, following my experience at KPMG (post training and qualification at CH) and maternity leave.

Encourage a good work life balance: difficult at times when working hard to impress but equally as important.

Be open to new opportunities and life experiences, not just work related.”

Susan Elsdon, Payroll Director

“If I met my younger self for coffee, I’d tell her to embrace every opportunity for growth and never shy away from challenges. Starting my career at 16, I was driven by ambition and a desire to gain knowledge, and looking back, I’d remind her that every step of the journey, both the successes and the setbacks is worth it. As a woman in professional services, it’s important to trust your abilities and not let imposter syndrome take hold. The path to leadership isn’t always linear, but it’s the determination to keep learning, pushing boundaries, and striving for progress that makes all the difference.”

Gemma Harris, Business Support

“Find yourself a job that doesn’t feel like a chore, learn from your mistakes and don’t be scared to learn new things, it will make you the best version of yourself.”

Emily Hunter, Assistant Manager

“If I met my younger self for coffee, I would tell her that all the hard work she’s putting into her exams will pay off (as everyone else keeps telling her)! I would tell her to get ready for so many exciting career opportunities that have come from Affinia and she that she will be so pleased with how far she has come so far!”

Donna Benton, Practice Manager

“Build Self-Worth – Trust your own judgement, set your own standards and be proud when you achieve the goals that you have set for yourself. Believe you can!”

Tanya Johnson, Group Business Support Manager

“To my younger self: Trust in your voice and use it, even when it feels small. Don’t let self-doubt or societal expectations dim your ambitions—your ideas matter, your contributions are valuable, and your potential is limitless. Seek mentors who inspire you, others who empower you, and peers who challenge you to grow. Remember, resilience is important – don’t worry about making mistakes, it is a step forward when you learn from it. Lastly, be kind to yourself; growth takes time, and every stage of your journey is worth celebrating. You’ve got this!”

Tanya Johnson | Group Business Support Manager | Affinia Ipswich

Suzanne Wagstaff, Tax Manager

“You are stronger than you realise and capable of more than you imagine.

Have confidence in your own ability, step out of your comfort zone and always learn from your mistakes.

Enjoy what you do and appreciate the people around you.”

Vanessa Emens, Group Chief People and Operations Officer

“If I met my younger self for a coffee, I would tell her to remember that no-one is perfect and that everyone has felt nervous and unsure at some point, so don’t worry when trying something new. Others are generally willing you to succeed and not flounder!”

A lot of great advice from some of the wonderful women at Affinia on International Women’s Day. We will leave you all with this one last piece of advice…
